1.) What is the purpose of this piece?

The purpose of this piece is to inform the reader of what is being done to protect their privacy. The article informs you that before, the government could just collect a variety of business and credit card records but afterwards, they can only collect that of people whom they think might be terrorists. It was written to inform the people of this.

2.) What does it mean to say that an issue is “politicized”? Is the Patriot Act a political issue? Can something be a political issue and not be politicized? Explain.

“Politicized” means to bring political character or flavor to. An issue being “politicized” would simply mean that someone took news about something and made it into political headlines. I would have to say that the Patriot Act is a political issue because it was made and passed by the government. And I do not think something can be a political issue without becoming politicized, because if it already has a political flavor or character to it, it has already become politicized by itself.

1.) Define: synthetic, genome, defanged, oncologist, innovation, scenario, and proponent

  • synthetic- adj.- noting or pertaining to compounds formed through a chemical process by human agency, as opposed to those of natural origin
  • genome- noun- a full set of cromosoes; all the inheritable traits of an orgaism
  • defanged – verb- to cause to become less powerful or threatening; render harmless
  • oncologist- noun- the branch of medical science dealing with tumors, including the origin, development, diagnosis, and treatment of malignant neoplasms
  • innovation- noun- something new or different introduced
  • scenario- noun- imagined or projected sequence of events
  • proponent- noun- a person who supports a cause or doctrine

2.) “If we can make life, then we can understand it.” Is this true? Explain.

This statement is true because if scientists can duplicate life then they have to be able to understand it. They have to be able to know how life works in order to simulate life. I agree with this statement.

3.) Could an international code of conduct by scientists prevent potential problems? If so, how? If not, why not?

A code of conduct may prevent potential problems to a certain extent. It may prevent some problems but if a scientist is testing out a new method that is against the code of conduct and that one method may work but they wouldn’t know because they couldn’t try it. So in some ways a code of conduct for scientists would help us but in some ways it would restrict us.
